USA-samarbete för att introducera Q-LAN i Europa (Swedish only)En av USA:s ledande leverantörer av kretsar för hemmaunderhållning, Entropic Communications har offentliggjort sitt samarbete med svenska QuiQom Systems. Samarbetet syftar till att introducera Q-LAN på den europeiska marknaden. Q-LAN är QuiQoms revolutionerande teknik för att distribuera snabbt bredband till bostäder, främst flerfamiljshus men också till exempel hotell. Genom att utnyttja redan existerande koax-kabelnät, som hittills använts för att distribuera analoga tv-signaler, används tekniken för att distribuera bredband med en bandbredd på over 100 Mbit/s. Eftersom den använder de redan befintliga koax-näten blir tekniken snabb, och kostnadseffektiv, att installera. Behovet av ingrepp i byggnaden är minimalt. I den tekniska utrustningen används Entropics kretsteknologi. Hittills outnyttjade frekvenser ovanför 862 MHz används för bredbandstrafiken. I målgruppen finns kabel-TV- och bredbandsoperatörer. Den stora bandbredden gör det intressant att använda tekniken för att distribuera IPTV. Det är en marknad som väntas växa enormt under de närmaste åren. Med hjälp av Q-LAN är det kostnadseffektivt att ansluta operatörernas abonnenter till de nya tjänsterna. Den första installationen av Q-LAN i Europa görs i Sverige. Köpings kabel-tv, har valt Q-LAN för att täcka sina framtida behov. – Vi är mycket nöjda med att Q-LAN ger oss möjlighet att erbjuda våra kunder nya bredbandstjänster, berättar Anders Nordqvist, VD för Köping Kabel-TV. Efter ett halvårs test av olika möjligheter, och utvärdering, valde vi Q-LAN eftersom det var en kostnadseffektiv lösning som var lätt att installera, säger han. – Vi förstår våra kunders behov av att skräddarsy lösningar för sina abonnenter. Vi kunde möta behoven av IPTV hos Köpings Kabel-TV med vårt Q-LAN, säger Arne Ljungdahl, VD QuiQom Systems. Det är också QuiQoms kombination av en kostnadseffektiv lösning och hög flexibilitet som imponerar hos Entropic Communications. – QuiQom har fokuserat hårt på innovativa lösningar för att möta den europeiska marknadens behov av bredbandsanslutningar. Vi är stolta att vara en del av deras lösning och ser fram mot att arbeta vidare med QuiQom för att förse denna spirande marknad med Internetanslutningar och tillgång till IPTV, säger John Graham, marknadschef för Entropic Communications. Sweden first in Europe to build Q-LAN based on MoCA standardQ-LAN uses free capacity in the cable network of a building, normally used for distribution of analogue TV and radio signals. Frequencies, higher than normally used for cable-TV, are used. The broadband is connected to a device in the house basement and distributed to a modem in each apartment. Today, this technology gives speeds up to 100 Mbps in both directions. A Swedish cable-TV company, in the Swedish town Köping, is Europe-first to install the technology. The operator, Köping Kabel-TV, has successfully tested the technology for more than three months, among 20 of its subscribers. All subscribers in the test received connection speeds of up to 100 Mbps. – We are very satisfied with the results of our tests and consider this technology as the most cost-effective way to offer broadband services to our subscribers in Köping, says Anders Nordqvist, CEO Köpings Kabel-TV The advantage is that no new cabling is needed in the building. The subscriber modem can be connected to any of the antenna outlet in the apartment. With increasing demand for IPTV this excellent technology makes it possible to place the IPTV-box where the TV set is located. It is also possible to have more than one IPTV-box in each apartment and the technology is well suited for distribution of HD-TV. The connection point in the basement can be installed in a few hours and are connected to the Internet through a fibre cable. Q-LAN has been developed during recent years and the first product prototypes were tested in 2005. The technology is today based on the industry standard developed by Multimedia over Coaxial Association (MoCA). Most leading telecom companies support this standard. QuiQom System AB, developer of Q-LAN, foresees an increasing demand for broadband capacity. This demand is primarily driven by the expansion of IPTV services. In Europe, each household has, on average, 2.4 TV sets. When they are to be supplied with IPTV a connection speed of at least 30 Mbps are needed. The technology of today, ADSL, cannot meet these demands. – Q-LAN is one of the most convenient ways to offer the future broadband services demanded by IPTV, says Helge Tiainen, VP marketing, QuiQom Systems AB.
